The Diabetes - Competition of Insulin and Glucagon in the Breaking down or Storing of Fats
Medical research has demonstrated that 75% of overweight people and 40% of normal-weight people suffer from a biological imbalance involving producing too much insulin. Why, and so what?
Let’s try to make is simple.
- Eating too many carbohydrates in your diet promotes producing and increasing in your blood stream too much insulin.
- Insulin is a fat storage hormone. It converts the carbohydrates you eat into stored body fat; and
- The only way to control the insulin in your body is to control the amount of carbohydrates in which you eat.
Let’s look at it another way. Every time you eat, including snacks, the sugar absorbing in the body triggers the brain to release hormones and tell the pancreas; sugar is on the way, crank up the insulin production. We have one problem, insulin have two pathways in the body in which it can go; the “Superhighway” to the fat storage bins in the body, or the “Farm-to-Market” roads to the bloodstream. Guess where it usually goes?
As such, the increasing production of insulin in your body promotes taking the carbohydrates in which you eat and storing them in your liver (“fatty liver”) and in the other fat storage reservoirs in the body leading you to become overweight [>25 BMD (Body Mass Index)] or obese (>30 BMD).
When you lose weight (reducing carbohydrates in your diet), the reduced amount of fat in the ‘body fat’ storage bin cannot absorb the insulin coming down the “superhighway” so the freeway becomes jammed up. Now the traffic (insulin) is forced to go the alternative routes like the “farm-to –market roads” to the blood stream. It allows improved metabolism in your blood stream of the sugars (carbohydrates) in which you eat. Here is the human dilemma who live in affluent countries in which we can eat in abundance. So what do we do?
When we eat too many carbohydrates in our diet, the body through the pancreas continues to produce too much insulin which induces us into a cycle in which we create overpowering craving for carbohydrates. In other words, as soon as we get “hungry”, food is dancing in front of our eyeballs. The seduction is so powerful, that we are impelled to eat what we perceive; foods are or eventually create sugar.
So the more we eat simple carbohydrates, the more we crave and the cycle becomes endless. Not only that, the more carbohydrates we eat, the more insulin our body produces in the pancreas. The job of the insulin is to remove the glucose from the bloodstream as fast as possible, and then take these excess carbohydrates and store them in the “fat storage bins”. Therefore: more carbs – more fat, and the old fat then does not get burned up and metabolized. Therefore insulin is called the “fat storage hormone”.

Yet, we have a problem. The reason most people cannot change their diet is from one reason alone; we crave food! Now we come back to the delirious experience of “food dancing in front of our eyeballs”. The secret is revealed in one Mantra ("May the Almighty G-d of Israel illuminate our intellect to lead us along the righteous path") which says, “If G-d made it, eat it the way He made it!” If you have taken the disciplined path of eliminating all the processed sugars, artificial sweeteners, and foods (simple carbohydrates) that create quickly “sugars” like Potatoes, Pasta, Rice and Breads, then you are on the road to a quick recovery.
Suddenly you will experience the joy of seeing the weight melt off your body, your energy levels increase, and your cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood Lipid panels take at your doctor’s office all begin to return to normal. A healthy life begins to return to you.
The secret to permanent low weight maintenance is to create the proper diet of clean meats (kosher preferred), complex carbohydrates focusing on eliminating all flour from the diet, whole grain cereals, sprouted grain breads, and downsizing the carbohydrate rich foods like potatoes to less than one-fourth of each meal. This is what happens in your body.

The secret has to do with balance. The curse of the American Diet is that we “carbize” every indigenous foods around the world by changing the ratio from 25% carbohydrates in a meal to 75% carbohydrates. Consider the following:
- You are sitting in the Plaza at Florence Italy enjoying this serene environment in an outdoor pizzeria with the Uffizi Museum to your right with Michelangelo’s “David” standing fifty feet tall nearby, while you order a pizza meal. The waiter brings out a tasty six inch paper thin crusted pizza with a salad, and an eight ounce drink. Within days, you return to America and also order a pizza, Americanized. It’s a fifteen inch pizza with one inch crust and three inches of cheese “slobbering” all over the top. Forget the salad and along with it comes a thirty two ounce Mega Diet Drink with an artificial sweetener that is 250 to 600 times sweeter than sugar. Your craving lust for sweetness now returns.
- You are dining in a family owned Chinese Restaurant when your order arrived, you also not that an elderly Chinese man is sitting nearby. You are curious about what and how he eats compared to you. Surprisingly the waiter brings both of you the same Chinese entrée ordered. Both of you get a small cup of rice; with one difference. You quickly ask the waiter, “Sir, I need a large bowl of rice, please!” Now you observe. The first thing you do is to turn over the large bowl of rice unto your plate, and “dribble the Chinese food over the rice”. Your notice, the elderly Chinese man is eating with relish the Chinese food adding a few kernel of rice to each bite. Your meal is 80% rice and 20% Chinese food. Your Chinese man sitting nearby’s meal is 20% rice and 80% Chinese food.
Such is our dilemma of American fast food restaurant eating. It is common knowledge in clinical medicine and research that a balanced meal with only one plate of food, with; one portion protein, one portion vegetables, one portion salad or a second vegetable, and one portion carbohydrate, will practically collapse the excessive production of insulin, and allow glucagon full access to begin utilizing your vast store of stored energy in the fats. Therefore to balance your carbohydrate diet and managing permanent weight loss, it takes limiting your carbohydrates to ¼th of your meal and then balancing it with macronutrients called proteins, fats, and complex carbohydrates which includes whole grain (as G-d made them, not “bran” added), fresh fruits (not juices or dried fruit) in order to stimulate the release of glucagon.
Just add one extra simple carbohydrate like a candy bar, donut, pie, ice cream and your blood insulin concentrations will increase up to 10-fold (1,000 times) within just a few minutes.
Consider the fact that just to get rid of excess glucose (sugar) in your diet, you pancreas will produce insulin levels 10-25 times above normal just to get rid of excess glucose (sugar). Not only that these increase insulin level will continue to remain elevated 2-3 hours even after you have finished consuming the offending sugars (carbohydrates). This is done for one reason only:
“The Role of Insulin is to remove the excess glucose from the bloodstream as fast as possible, and to store those sugars (primary as granulated sugar or honey) or extra carbohydrates as fat.”
Yet, when the insulin levels of high, it blocks the levels of glucagon from operating efficiently in the body. This means that glucagon’s primary role to unlock and burn up stored body fat for energy is hindered.
“Too much insulin (stimulated by simple carbohydrates) in the body, blocks glucagon from unlocking the fat, and to utilized (use up) the extra fat stored in the “Fat Banks”.
So let make it simple; excess carbohydrate consumption locks the doors to the fat storage bins! The results; more fat is accumulating in the body. It is thereby not available for conversion to muscle energy.
Not only that with elevated insulin levels, sodium is retained, which causes fluid retention and edema in hands and legs. This in turn causes high blood pressure and eventually congestive heart failure. This is a road to poor health.
So if you want to help your doctor to control your diabetes without using short acting insulin, then it is critical for you to “grab your destiny” and change the way you eat. The biggest secret is to:
- Eliminate processed sugar (not fresh fruits) from your diet;
- Avoid all artificial sweeteners, included Diabetic foods, Diet Drinks, all foods labeled as “Lite or Light” all foods or beverages advertised or promoted as Diabetic safe or low calorie unless it is purely nature in the form in which the Creator of the Universe created it to be.
- Eliminate all flour out of your diet.
- Choose only Whole Grain Cereals, such “Great Grains by Post with Pecans”. “Uncle Sam’s Cereal”, 5 minute Old Fashion Rolled Oats, and Ezekiel or other Sprouted Grain Cereal.
- Avoid all cereals relabeled with the American Cereal Industry’s new fraudulent “Whole Grain Label”, which states “A Whole Grain Cereal is one which uses all three parts of the whole grain,” instead of “If G-d made it, eat it the way He made it.” They are trying to convince the America public that you can take “white four” the former “berry” of the grain, plus “bran” the former “shell or husk” of the grain plus add “wheat germ” and Eureka, we now have a Whole Grain Cereal. Wrong! The matrix of the grain is destroyed, so is its nutritional value.
- Read the label: Kashi Cereals proudly labels their cereals on the back with; Whole Grain barley flour, Whole Grain Wheat flour, Whole Grain Oat flour and the fraud continues. If it is flour, it may be “Whole Wheat” but not “Whole Grain”.
In summary: Remember the facts that when the pancreas is producing insulin (high levels), less calories are burned up and more calories are transformed into fat. At the same time, when insulin levels are low, more calories are burned up and less calories are converted into fat while the body weight continues to decrease.
Your body fat cannot be burned up and utilized into energy at the same time when the body is busy converting excess carbohydrates (simple sugars) into more body fat. The cure for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart attacks and obesity is really simple. Losing excess fat and controlling blood sugar levels is a matter of controlling insulin and your carbohydrate diet.
