Bárðarbunga, Iceland’s Second Largest Volcano, rumbling with Earthquakes

As the April, 2010 year anniversary for the eruption at Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull Volcano comes near, a new earthquake stream has been localizing around Iceland’s Volcano Krýsuvík. Since earthquakes are an indication of the increasing swelling upwards of erupting magma from the core at the center of the earth, we also understand that increasing hydrothermal activity in Iceland suggests that this internal brew will eventually erupt into a new exploding volcanic eruption.
Towards the end of February, 2011, Jón Frímann with the “Iceland Volcano and Earthquake Blog” began to notice that earthquakes were becoming progressively more intense in magnitude and concentration. He noticed that they were beginning to swarm around the region of the Krýsuvík volcano. One the 27th of February, the earthquakes began to intensify to over 400 quakes up to a Mw of 3.7. One day later, there were over 800 earthquakes. With the intensity gradually building up, it reminded the researchers that this was the same pattern that was noticed in the week approaching the eruption in the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull volcano explosion.
Given the location and how this earthquake swarm is beginning to behave, it was his opinion that these swarms were due to magma pushing up from the crust in this area. They are able to monitor the underground hydrothermal activity and as long as it is getting larger after an earthquake swarm then the assumption is that the ground is cracking and hot molton lava is warming up the water as it spreads outwards. Yet the question still remains elusive. Was this going to start a new eruption or not? Their opinion, the chances are growing that as long as this earthquake pattern continues under the Volcano Krísuvík volcano, an eruption will eventually start. Jón Frímann’s opinion;
Jón Frímann - “It is going to be one of the Hawaii type eruptions. Yet if it is under water then it is going to be a Surtsey type of eruption for as long there is water getting into the crater. So don’t expect aircraft problem if there is an eruption in Krýsuvík volcano.”
Meanwhile, scientists are waiting anxiously, for the evidence is rising that another mega-volcano is about to erupt in Iceland. Once again, one year later, anxious pall is casting itself over Western Europe. Swarms of earthquakes were recently clustering near Iceland’s second largest volcano; Volcano Bárðarbunga. The recent memory of the 2010 shut-down of most of the major international airports in Northern Europe was not a pleasant scenario to consider for a volcano that is exponentially larger than the 2010 Volcano Eyjafjallajökull explosion.
Not only that, some of the plumes of ash drifted almost to the Nation of Israel. It was so alarming that Israel went on high alert with concern as they watched Iran and Syria going into “strike formation” with their missiles towards Israel. With clouds of ash covering Israel, Iran and Syria could have struck with missiles aimed at Israel while the Israeli air force jets were immobilized because of ashen clouds drifting over their country.
Coming from the largest of Iceland’s glaciers called Vatnajökull Glacier, Volcano Bárðarbunga, Iceland's second biggest volcano today towers 6,600 feet into the air. With 43 square miles imbedded under ice, including what is called the “Seven Sisters of Iceland”; this is this nation’s largest volcanic system.
From the mists of history, in the 15th century, the Volcano Bárðarbunga claimed her share of fear in the past history of mankind. It was in the year of 1477, that Bárðarbunga last major eruption occurred. Its horrendous memories have been imbedded into the annals of history and the amnesia of their memory is because of that past catastrophic event. At one moment of time, Northern Europe, the land of the Lost Tribes of the House of Israel was remarkably changing in the weather patterns of that region.
The skies became darkened for decades as the largest lava flow in over 10,000 years (evolutionary time, not biblical creation time) gave Iceland her largest expansion of size in record. The historical tale gives a grim picture of its affect upon all of Scandivavia, and a large sector of Northern Russia and Europe. If such a specter were to occur again, the worst fears of the late Cornell University astronomer Carl Sagan would come to pass as he spoke of his futuristic projections of a nuclear winter.
The entire regions, from the British Isles, the lands of the Vikings to the north and over to western Russia, the economies were be left reeling as they choked under volumes of volcanic dust and poisonous superheated gases. Today, commercial airlines would again be grounded and the economic activity in that entire region would come to a grinding halt for months. The agricultural sectors of Europe would be devastated without sun to grow crops. In this era of the 4th Seal of Revelation, where famine would be encroach rapidly every nation of the world, the prophet of Revelation’s vision of Death and Hades may become to a living reality in Northern Europe, the land of the Lost Ten Tribes of Northern Israel.
The fears, according to scientists are very justified, for an eruption of Bárðarbunga Volcano could immobilize Europe even more so than in April 2010, when European air traffic was paralyzed for weeks, causing billions of dollars in cost. The ashen air prevented air transport of food, fresh vegetables and other personal commodities. There were significant shortages because of a moratorium against all air traffic.

Iceland: Bardarbunga: The Giants Awakens
An eruption by the second largest Icelandic be any worse? Most researchers and scientist are quick to personally concede that speculations of the effect of Bárðarbungas eruption would dwarf the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull glacier volcano. Such an event cannot be discounted, according to Pall Einarsson, the professor of Geophysics at the University of Iceland. Pall Einarsson while speaking on Iceland’s national TV RC:v stated that interpreting the scale and outcomes of these tremors is difficult to assess; one in part because Iceland has very few seismographs in the desolated areas of the volcanoes. Tectonic shifting and magma eruptions are hard to evaluate for the potential of a catastrophic blast.
The Projected Ash Cloud of the Volcano Eyjafjallajokull as it covered Europe in April 2010
As Einarsson confirmed, people do have “every reason to worry” for in recent weeks the largest flurry of earthquakes have occurred. They were located in the northeastern region of Iceland’s volcano region. There was “no doubt” in his mind that lava was moving uphill towards the mantle of the earth. Yet, with the lack of quake coverage backup of the entire region, the few seismographs they have could not provide accurate information such as the depth of the quakes and the exact locations of numerous localized earth movements that were occurring simultaneously at the same time. Since that interview, the news of another Icelandic eruption went viral over the internet a few week ago.
The international world community will never forget the date in April 1910, when Volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted; ejecting mighty plumes of volcanic ash into the air. This volcano opened up the fears of a catastrophic world famine and massive hyper-inflation in the coming months. For weeks the western European airspace was closed to surrounding Northern Europe. Thousands of national and international passenger planes, plus millions of pounds of passenger luggage were stranded, leaving the passengers helpless, camping out in airports like Boy Scout troops. As Einarsson confirmed:
Pall Einarsson – “This is the most active areas of the country if we look at the whole country together. There is no doubt that lava there is slowly growing, and the seismicity of the last few days is a sign of it. We need better measurements because it is difficult to determine the depth of earthquakes because it is in the middle of the country and much of the area is covered with glaciers."
Under Europe’s largest ice cap glacier, the Vatnajokull Glacier, in the southeastern part of Iceland, there exist seven volcanoes. With almost all of them active, they are also located near to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge plate boundary that dissects just under the western side of the glacier that separates the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate. And almost all of these volcanoes are active.

Earthquake and Eruptions in Iceland in Early 2010
This visualization shows earthquakes leading up to and during two eruptions in Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland in March and April 2010.
It was on September 27, 2010, a clustering of more than 30 – 1.5-3.7 Mw earthquakes occurred within minutes of each other at a depth of 5 to 10 km. Have these quakes continues? We have no additional information.
The Seven Sister Volcanoes under the Icelandic Vatnajokull Glacier
This year, the noted volcano watcher Jón Frímann, claims on his blogsite:
Jón Frímann – “After the Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption in 2010 it seems that geologists in Iceland take earthquake swarms more seriously than they did before. It is clear that only time is going to tell us if there is going to be an eruption in this area soon or not."
With a strato-volcano towering 6,600 feet in the air, and now submerged and entombed under ice as part of Iceland’s largest volcanic system; it does leave all of us with a moment of pause. The Vatnajokull Glacier region where the last swarms of earthquakes were noted could reignite anytime soon. Not only is Bárðarbunga the second largest volcano, it is also sitting directly over a major lava conduit. With this huge volcano crater covering 43 square miles and invisible because it is encased in ice, there are few human observers that would be aware of its eruption.
Unknown to those that are watching earth changes in Iceland, they fail to comprehend that earth changes are a global event and highly related to the instability of continental tectonic plate stability. Over the past twelve months, Planet Earth has been rocked with numerous seismic changes, earthquakes, floods, plate subductions that anyone with “eyes that can see” would remember at least the recent past:
- January 12, 2010, a 7.0 Mw Earthquake epicenter struck 16 miles from the capital of Haiti at Port-o-Prince. It left a catastrophic toll that affected the entire world in its scope; estimated 316,000 people were killed, 300,000 injured, over 1 to 1.8 million homeless, 250,000 residence, 30,000 commercial building destroyed plus most of the nations landmarks including the Presidential Palace in ruins.
- February 12, 2010, an 8.8 Mw Earthquake struck Chili in six provinces, over 720 people reported dead, 320,000 homes damaged, 98% of the nation experience power loss, and $6.6 billion in losses.
- February 27, 2010, a 6.9 Mw earthquake hit Southern Japan’s Okinawa Island with two injured.
- May 2010 a series of floods and landslides in Guizhou with a death toll of over 1,070 people.
- July 2010 heavy monsoon rains engulfed predominately the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan with 1,600 lives lost with over 3,000 suspected, and 14 million people affected. The Great Indus River monsoon flood waters never receded as it is now believed that the Indian Plate subducted or dropped 10-15 feet on the Pakistan western end, leaving upwards to 1 million acres of prime farmland, homes and businesses now under water.
- July 2010 left Russian homeland writhing with 100s of forest fires as record setting temperatures upward to 111 degrees set national records. The loss of life was estimated upwards to 3,000 people. Seven regions were affected by state of emergencies for fires, and 28 regions in state of emergencies for crop failures. The wheat crops were severely affected for the entire year’s growing season.
- August 11, 2010, a series of severe flooding hit the Gansu Province of China with over 1,500 dead or missing. Then in the city of Longnan near Zhouqu, 1,254 people were killed on August 17, 2010 in floods where mudslides crashed through the city with 490 additional missing. Over 6,000 homes have collapsed. Over 140 million people were affected by floods, with 4.66 million evacuated by June and 10.42 million evacuated by August.
The Great Floods of China left 1.1 million homes destroyed, 24 million acres of crops inundated, 2 million acres completely destroyed, and 4.63 million acres of farmland partially destroyed, with $31 billion in damages. The major rivers of China were affected; Yangtze, Yellow and the Songhue plus the Jialiang, Han and Huai Rivers. Human casualties included 1,785 reported dead, plus 1,661 people missing in 28 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalites in the People’s Republic of China and North Korea.
- January 3, 2011 – a repeat 7.1 Mw quake struck again in Chili with minimal losses.
- February 22, 2010 – A second and more devastating series of earthquakes that virtually destroyed the downtown district of historic Christchurch, New Zealand with a 6.3 Mw earthquake erupting in the region of the Tasman Glacier Lake region.
In March 2011, the Volcano Bárðarbunga had still not revealed her angry face for over one hundred years since the year of 1910. The last mega-explosion of Volcano Bardarbunga was in the year of 1477, when its catastrophic effect across the continent of Europe cast the largest plume of ash and pumice in the history of volcanism, and according to scientist’s estimation today we can measure its lava flow, reputed to be the largest lava flow recorded in nature in the last 10,000 years.
It is today believed that the Bárðarbunga catastrophe may have caused famine and economic disruption in cash-strapped Spain that had recently returned to Catholic Christian domination when the Islamic Moors were driven out of Spain by King Ferdinand I and Queen Isaballe II. We see such evidence for it was in the year of 1477, when the volcanic eruption was very active that the Spanish Royal Crown of Ferdinand and Isabella began to segregate the Jews from the rest of the population. They also segregated the suspected Jews from the rest of the New Christians called also Conversos. These restrictions included restrictions in the Jews ability to make a living, by voiding Christian debts to Jews and in the Spanish ghettoizing the Jewish population also prohibited them from any type of economic activities outside the Jewish Quarters. The anti-Semitic unrest by the Spaniards against the Jews precipitated the eventual expulsion of the Jews from Spain on the 9th of Av 1492.
Amazing, Christopher Columbus, a secret kabbalist Jew was sitting off shore with three ships and a majority of his ship crews, Jewish, waiting out this sacred day of infamy, before he “sailed the ocean blue, in fourteen hundred ninety two”. Will we see a repeat performance of that era in our modern day. As history attests, repeat performances are almost a given conclusion, for the predictability of man’s sinful nature almost assures such a grim prospect.
Revelation 6:7-8 – “When he broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living being say, “Go!”. I looked, and there in front of me was a pallid, sickly-looking horse. Its rider’s name was Death, and Sh’ol followed behind him. They were given authority to kill one-quarter of the world by war, by famine, by plagues and with the wild animals of the earth.
