Ascending to the Throne of the Divine on Rosh Hashanah
“on the first day of the Seventh Month, you shall observe complete rest, a sacred occasion celebrated with loud blasts. You shall not work at our occupations, and you shall bring an offering by fire to Adonai.”
Leviticus (Vayiqra) 23:27
It was on a special Rosh Hashanah that Rav Yacov (Rabbi Jacov) was sitting in a synagogue listening with reverence to the chant of a cantor and was meditating upon its message. With his eyes closed with reverence his mind began to ascend to the Throne of the Almighty One.
There upon the Throne of Judgment he saw the Holy One of Israel sitting as He was surrounded by myriads of angels in judgment before the Holy Court in the Seventh Heaven. There the angels opened the Book of Life. He watched with amazement as his name began to glow with the divine recognition that here was his moment of judgment.
As he intently watched his name inscribed with a radiant light glowing in the Book, he noted with wonder that before his eyes there unfolded a panoramic movie, every word he had thought, every deed good or bad, he had done in the past year and every neglected moment he had missed to bring a moment of inspiration to someone else. It revealed every dark moment of his life, the struggles within his consciousness that he passed throughout the year, and the decision making processes that he had rendered in bringing deeds of hope, inspiration, and even comfort to the poor, the infirmed and the lonely. There was not one small deed that was missed in the evaluation by the Divine of his life.
Then there came a different mystery. He saw the moments of time he was working hard on his charity projects, and bringing thoughtful gifts to the young scholars in the yeshiva’s (schools), but noticed how he also failed to recognized HaShem’s (“The Name’s”) angels who were following close beside him; clueless and oblivious to the assistance of his companions from the spirit-world of light. Though he knew that he was doing “service” for the Holy One, he failed to recognize that the emissaries of the Almighty were also attending and supporting him also.
The good deeds of the Rav (rabbi) were engraved in black upon the side of the book highlighted with the word, “Credit”. Every bad deed was engraved in red letters upon the side of the book highlighted with the word, “Debit”. The good deeds of the Rabbi were then balanced against the bad deeds.
As his trial before the judgment scene in the Heavenly Court began its proceedings, Rav Yacov watched this time with astonishment as his mitzvots were transformed into angels that rose from the pages of the Book of Life in defense of his good actions throughout the entire year. Then HaSatan (Satan), as the prosecuting angel rose up before the Divine Judge and began to list all the “sins” of the rabbi throughout the past year. His heart was palpitating in anticipation and also in dread he awaited the Divine Verdict. Would he receive his name inscribed in the Book of Life and be blessed for another year.
Suddenly his defending angel arose and stood before him and said, “Rav Yakov, the Holy One has not yet rendered a verdict” and his eyes dropped in the stunned silence. “I don’t understand”, he proclaimed. “Why must I keep waiting”? Today is the Day of Judgment as proclaimed by the “Holy One, Blessed be His Name”. On this day alone all three of the Books of Life, Suspended, and Death are to be opened”. One book is filled with the names of the Righteous Ones, the other is filled with the Wicked Ones. Is my name inscribed in either of these two books?”
“No” proclaimed the august angel of defense. “That is why you must wait for both the completely righteous and the completely wicked to receive their just reward, when the Holy One will render judgment and seal it with His verdict at one time.” But your name, I see, Rav Yacov, has been written in the Third Book, the Book of Suspended Judgment, that lists all those who are neither completely righteous nor entirely wicked.” “What then shall become of me,” the puzzled and shocked Rav proclaimed.
“Your verdict in judgment has been kept in a state of suspension until Yom Kippur, the Great Day of Judgment,” stated the defending angel. Yet, during the next Ten Days of Awe, you may choose to evaluate your life, clean up your mental and emotional life in order to of “service to others” rather than “service to yourself”. It is time to repent, and pray to the Almighty One who wants your allegiance to Himself rather than to others, so that He can work in your life. He wants you to be His feet and His hands as He tries to refocus and reshape their lives. If you do your “tzedakah” (acts of loving kindness) and turn your heart in “emuna” (repentance and faith) in the power of the Almighty One of Israel, then you will be inscribed in the Book of Life for another year.
Rabbi Yakov suddenly came back to earth’s reality. As he listened with more intent to the words of the cantor’s chant, while opening the pages of his prayer book, He prayed to the Divine One during the service called “Selichot” (Forgiveness) and their laid His life again in submission to the G-d of Creation. He must learn to live his life in the shadows, not as an ornament on display for the Almighty One, but as one that allows the transforming power of the Divine One to flow through his life, yet revealed as HaShem’s mighty power of transformation, restoration, and redemption.”
