Hanukkah, Antiochus Epiphanes IV and the Maccabee Resistance to the Hellenization of the Jews

The Abomination of Desolation

The Jewish festival of Hanukkah (Chanukah), though not one of the Torah prescribed festivals given to the Israelites on the mount called Sinai, is still one of the Jewish major festivals that is brimming full of insights and typologies that are surrounding our lives as the year of 2012 arrives.  With all of its potential catastrophes and economic calamities, plus a major world war that will involve the United States plus Russia and China, it appears that 2012 will be a year that will be filled with biblical apocalypse. Let us look at this festival and see what relevance we can historically glean from it to comprehend the “tribulations” we are facing today.

Tribulations? You ask. You are right to ask for the populations of peoples that live upon the entire earth have sunk into a deep amnesia. They have been anesthetized by a make-believe world that our purpose of life is to “make money to worship a ‘golden calf’” or “to make money to bring pleasure to one’s self”. This is a world dedicated to pampering ourselves, to glorify our ideologies and our concepts of life. 

This is the essence of hellenization, the apex of the Grecian world and the Olympics we glorify today, which grew out of that culture. This was the apex of the process of democracy which Greece gave our world, and a scholastic thought system of “rationalism” that toppled the Roman world culture of “totalitarianism”.  

When the brute power of Rome toppled the Grecian world, they made one mistake. The Roman rulers took all of the Greek scholars and teachers, and brought them to Rome to teach their Roman elite the ways of Grecian culture. The culture of Grecian Hellenism then took a blanket and smothered the ancient Roman pre-imperial culture with the Hellenistic culture of Greece.  

If Hellenization is a process, then in a spectrum there must have been a culture that was purely Grecian, with its culture, its religion, its sports and games, irreverent dancing, hedonistic lifestyle and all that was wrapped up into a culture of “self glorification”.  Let us begin to assemble some common threads to that ancient world 2,200 years ago, where the clash of Grecian Hellenization met the stubborn yet righteous Jews who lived by strict rules of a theocratic culture who claimed that:

Hebrew Judaic Culture - “There is a G-d in heaven who created the universe.  He gave to a “Chosen Family” during a cataclysmic volcanic explosion at a mount called Sinai, a blueprint of life called the “Torah”.

Within these teachings and imposing strict rules called “commandments” or “mitzvos”, it clearly alluded that if they followed these mitzvos, they could change their sinful genetic composition of their own bodies that had degraded to the 49^th degree of Tuma  (degradation or contamination). By literally following the blueprint, they could physically restore themselves back to the era when their ancestral parents, Adam and Eve, lived in peace and harmony with the natural world.

There in Gan Eden these two archetypical ancestral parents were created in the World of Formation, perfect as efflugent beings radiating with the “Glory of G-d”. In the future era of the Messiah, Gan Eden will be restored and humans may once again be restored to their former state as ‘radiant’ sons and daughter of G-d.

Here was an era when “Adam” or “red man” could personally “walk and talk with G-d”. He could literally observe the process of the Divine interacting with the rest of the universe, using the created forces called “angels” who were created in the “World of the Spirit Beings”, that controlled all the forces of the universe.  This included creating and destroying stars and planets and creating life on planets all over the universe."

This is only a world where today we can conceptualize, but we have no concept of how it worked or functioned. Except for hints given to us in the Torah, where the patriarchal forefathers of the Jews from the House of Judah and the “Lost Israelites” from the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel lived and interacted with divine beings who physically manifested themselves with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, we would be “lost” in how to comprehend spiritual truths as written in the Writings and the Prophets, the Hebrew scriptures called the TaNaKh.

So we find that Hellenization is the opposite extreme of the cultural process given as a “blueprint” in the commandments given by G-d called the Torah. These commands were given to a tainted and oppressed peoples stuck living in degradation under Egyptian imperial slavery. Yet by believing and living a life of Torah observance in each of its precepts, the Hebrew people were given the promise that their lives could be reclaimed and redeemed. They would no longer be irrevocably lost peoples from their physical or mental slavery. They could once again become “holy children of G-d” in covenant with their Creator; if only they followed the commands of G-d. 

It was to be their future, that they would become “holy priests representing the G-d of Israel”. They would become a “beacon of light to the 70 gentile nations” on planet earth.  They would teach the rest of the gentile people that there was “God of Israel who was the Creator and Redeemer of the Universe”.  They would be destined to teach the rest of the gentile nations how to worship the G-d of Life and Creation of the universe, as opposed to a future, where humans only idolized themselves and in their eyes would seek to become as gods, with a little “g”. 

This act of defiling the Temple of Zerubabbel in Jerusalem by a Syrian king who was intent on Hellenizing the entire world as they knew it, would later be called the “Abomination of Desolation”.  It was a purposeful event of a Greek totalitarian tyrant called Antiochus Epiphanes IV. It was this master of Hellenization who determined to break the backs of the resistant and “stiff-necked Jew” in Jerusalem by desecrating that one lone House of Worship where the G-d of Israel claimed to “rest His feet” on the “footstool” of His only Temple.  

So the story of Chanukah began with Alexander the Great, who with the speed of lighting, took his military and conquered the then-known world. Then at the height of his power, it appears that Alexander the Great was assassinated while resting in the palace of King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon, probably by “poison”. 

Alexander’s kingdom in the making collapsed and broke up into four “horn powers”. Its legacy left behind was a culture called Hellenization, the adoration of the “self”, the pampering of the emotions, the glorification of rationalization, and the destruction of any thought cultures or “belief system” that stood in its way. It became the epitome of a self-centered lifestyle that gave us the words called; selfishness, self-seeking, the me-generation, that by seeking the joy of pandering only one’s self, one could achieve happiness through self-actualization or self-fulfillment.

This was the ideology and idolatry of the Grecian Hellenistic culture that in the year of 167 BCE slammed into the resistance of the stubborn “stiff-necked” Jewish culture called Judaism.  Here was a tribe of people that believed that there was a G-d who was so awesome, powerful and perfect, that they dare not even speak his Name. So today, instead, they called Him HaShem, meaning “The Name”. 

They built a second temple called the Zerubabbel Temple, and through strict rules imposed upon them, they sought to rectify the wrongs that they had done that created the cultural process that destroyed their cultural apex of glory, when Kings David and Solomon’s United Temple ruled the then known world.

Yet, because, they defied the G-d of Israel and refused to obey his 613 commandments given to them, their capital city, Jerusalem was destroyed, and their forefathers were sent into captivity into Babylon. Babylon, their new task-masters, was a cultural mecca reminiscent of the more ancient “Nimrod Culture” that gave our world the Tower of Babel, a “One World Order” that demanded that all man think alike, do alike, talk one world language, and pay obeisance to one world leader who ruled through “power, greed, and control” ruled the whole earth.

A citizen of Nimrod’s world was the Sumerian son of an oracular high priest, called Abraham. It was Abraham’s quest to find the G-d of Creation. He then spent his life teaching all those who crossed his path about the G-d of life who saved him from the fiery furnace, redeemed him as a babe, and sent him to be taught in the ways of truth at the feet of his ninth and tenth-great grandfathers, Noah and Shem. 

As his later descendants would become the Hebrew Jewish people, they conceptualized a different world; one in which would glorify their G-d rather than glorify themselves.  They became the first peoples, who on their own learned how to become of “service to others” rather than “service to self”.   

Through their ancient cleric called Ezra the Scribe, the exiled Jews were redeemed back to the Land of Israel, called “aliyah” and rebuilt their temple.  Even though it was a mere image of their reminiscence of the glory of King Solomon’s Temple, it was still purified and made holy unto the L-rd.  They restarted again their Hebrew Jewish culture in the land of Israel and called it Judaism. They refused to worship man and its hedonistic culture of human self-glory, and instead worship only the Creator G-d of the Universe.

The year was 167 BCE when the Abomination of Desolation occurred.  It was on that day celebrated as Chanukah or Hanukkah that Grecian Hellenism confronted Jewish Judaism “eyeball to eyeball”.  The Emperor Antiochus Epiphanes IV effectively sought to absorb this new renewed Jewish cultural lifestyle, capture and take possession of its temple treasures, and then sought to destroy its temple by desecrating its spiritual sacredness by sacrificing a pig, a symbol of the gluttony scavenging culture of Grecian Hellenism. The “Culture of worshipping Self Righteousness” confronted the face of the “Culture to worshipping a Righteous G-d”.  The Temple of Zerubabbel of the Jews was desecrated and defiled.

The story then turns to the uprising of the faithful family of priest, turned warriors for G-d, drove out the military forces of the largest empire of that era, cleansed the sanctuary, and prepared restart their offering to the G-d with a national celebration. When the day began, they discovered that they had only one small bottle of oil for the menorah light – good for only one day, but it lasted a full eight days, and thus the celebrations of eight days of Chanukah, the “Festival of the Lights” for the next 2,275 years.

Though it was through the bravery of a priestly family called the Maccabees that in their fierce determination, they drove the Greeks out of Jerusalem and the Land of Israel. The culture of “Hashem” won but the seductive process of Hellenizing Judaism began to eat again upon the culture of Judaism until the Jewish people again lost their identity.

The Maccabee priests, whose assigned job was to be “priests unto Israel”, now became the Jews revered “idols” as rulers of Judah.  They usurped the throne of King David, who’s only rightful descendant to sit upon the throne was a descendant of the royal house of Kings David and Solomon.  Later, the former Maccabee priests, who now became the Hasmonean kings of Judah, then sought to usurp the throne of the High Priest of Israel, whose only rightful descendant to rule in the Temple of the G-d of Israel,  were the descendants of the Zadok the High Priest of King David and Solomon.

Through the process of power, greed and control, those who were righteous priests now became predators of power and self-glory.  They fought amongst their brothers and cousins as to who was the best, seeking to usurp the royal throne by power and might rather than to be consecrated and crowned with the “Holy Oil” by the prophetic spokesmen of G-d. 

They built Greek gymnasiums and stadiums in Jerusalem and began to Hellenize the Jews by emulating the culture of the Greeks and the Roman. Soon the entire Jewish culture was again caught up into glory to themselves instead of glory to the G-d of Israel. Within decades, the Jewish culture was almost fully absorbed and Torah Judaism became known as Hellenistic Judaism.

The Hasmonean kings and queens were then overpowered by a Jewish proselyte from Edom who became a convert to Judaism called King Herod the Great. He won the reluctant affirmation of the Jewish elite by remodeling their temple. The Temple Mount would once again host the most glorious temple in the world during the height of the Imperial Roman Empire.

Yet in the process the Jewish culture again sunk to the 49^th degree of Tuma (where the 50^th degree is complete contamination) until the entire Second Temple culture collapsed into depravity and self-destruction. The Edomite city of Rome empowered by spreading Grecian Hellenism to the rest of the world, then brought their warriors came to the last resisters of Greco-Roman cultural Hellenism and destroyed the largest and most glorious temple in the then known world down to bedrock.  As Ask-why UK so aptly described: 

Ask-why UK – “If Hellenization is a process, it must have at one extreme the purely Greek culture, religion and all. At the other extreme was a stubborn adherence to the rules imposed by Ezra. Palestinian Jews, “the Hebrews”, had reason for concern when they saw their temple taken over by “the Greeks”— Hellenized Jews.

It was only a question of time before Yehouah became Zeus, and surely that is the point about the “Abomination of Desolation”. It is simplistic to say that “Jews were unique and did not lose their identity”. The early success of Christianity was precisely because it appealed to those Hellenized Jews that were crossing the boundary from Judaism.”

Today, the Jews of the House of Judah and the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel in America and Europe are standing in an epochal era of history. Tyranny is again being met face to face. The mountains of Israel upon which the forces of resistance by the Maccabees fought against tyranny and oppression, are now again a battlefield claimed by a culture of darkness and death.  The new Maccabees are the Jewish Settler Patriots in Shomron and Judea.  

It’s time that we accept that the bravest people on Planet Earth today are the pioneering settlers in Shomron and Judea.  With unflinching courage, they continue to carve out home sites in which to raise their children in pristine solitude, alone with their Creator.  This courage has been unmatched since the “wild west days” in America’s mid-19^th century as America settlers of the Lost Tribes of Israel moved west across Indian territories to create homes in the wilderness of America. The 19^th century settlers of the Lost Tribes of Israel in America had a dream.  Today the 21^st century settlers of Israel have a mandate and a destiny.

The Famous Jewish Hasidic Pilgrimage on Rosh Hashana to the Grave of Rabbi Nachman of Uman in the Ukraine

Rebbe Nachman (1772-1810) was the great grandson of the famous Hasidic rabbi and storyteller, the Baal Shem Tov. Yet, it was Rebbe Nachman who revived and breathed new life in the Hasidic Jewish Movement by integrating the secrets of mystical Judaism called the Jewish Kabbalah of Rabbi Isaac Luria (1534-1572) that gave relationship between the Eternal Creator and mortal man in a finite universe.  Here the inner and mystical teaching of the TaNaKh gained new dimensions and changes in its religious observance.

According to Rabbi Nachman, closeness to G-d was as natural as “speaking to your best friend.”  This informal and intimate relationship can be in a closed room or a private outdoor setting such as the forests and the fields. This type of meditation is called “hitbodedut”.  As Nachman wrote:

Rabbi Nachman – “When a person meditates in the fields, all the grasses join in his prayer and increase its effectiveness and power”

Let us listen to Rabbi Lazer Brody as he talks about Hitbodedut as part of one’s meditative relationship with G-d.

   

This manner of communication with G-d was when he pours his heart out with all his thoughts, frustrations, feelings, problems. There is nothing in a human life that could not become part of this intimate communication with G-d as you use the opportunity to examine your own lifestyle, behavior and motivations while seeking the right pathway to follow in the future. Here was the great influence of Rebbe Nachman in the early Hasidic movement.

So today, in honor of this famous Hasidic rabbi, every year, over twenty thousand Breslov Jews travel around the world to the small town of Uman in the Nation of Ukraine in eastern Europe.  There they meet over Rosh Hashanah and celebrate the festival at the last dwelling site of Rebbe Nachman of Uman.  Here is this following video, we see the tens of thousands of Jews dancing in the streets of Uman on Rosh Hashanah 2011 by the Tomb of Rebbe Nachman and the town of Uman, Ukraine(Video), after reciting the Tikkun Klali, a recitation of 10 Psalms called “The General Remedy or Rectification”.  

  

 

The facts that tens of thousands of Jewish pilgrims go to the Tomb of Rebbe Nachman yearly, it doesn’t mean that Rebbe Nachman was not controversial or always well accepted.  As Rabbi Brody wrote:

Rabbi Lazer Brody – “People ask me why so many groups – even among the Chassidic movement – were against Rebbe Nachman of blessed and saintly memory. In my humble opinion, the answer is quite obvious. Rebbe Nachman’s magnet was truth. During his time, few were attracted by that magnet. Rebbe Nachman was not a populist Rebbe – he didn’t distribute wholesale blessings for health, income, and worldly amenities. His soul concern was bringing his followers closer to the truth.

Rebbe Nachman disdained the false leaders who were concerned with their own appetite-gratification, whether they sought prestige, fame, money or whatever. On numerous occasions, he chastised the mefursamim shel sheker – the famous false leaders, whom most of the masses chased after. The masses were much more comfortable with tasting their leader’s potato kugel (pudding potatoes and other vegetables) on Friday night tish (gathering of Hassidim around their Rebbe) and feeling great about themselves: “I’m a chassid – a pious one!”

Rebbe Nachman’s demands of his followers to wake up at midnight for tikkun chatzot [Jewish ritual of lamentation recited after midnight (Psalms 119:52)], to speak to Hashem in personal prayer and in probing self-assessment every day, to guard one’s eyes and zealously maintain personal holiness, and to put the bulk of one’s efforts to Torah and prayer were a lot less popular then the mere outer trappings of shtreimel-and-gefilte fish Chassidut. (Shtreimel – stuffed hats of the “pious ones” Chassidim eating gelfilte (chopped and stuffed fish with seasonings). Add to this his criticism of false leaders, and you don’t get a formula for popularity among the masses, in the short term...

Breaking with the Jewish traditions of most Hassidic hoyfn (communal courtyards when the Rebbe and his followers would sit and talk), Rabbi Nachman of Breslov did not provide for the dynasty of rabbi’s to following in his footsteps as his descendants.  When “Rebbe Nachman” as he was called, died in 1810, he left the instructions that his talmidim (disciples) were to continue to look to him as “The Rebbe”. Today, he is still recognized as the head of the Breslover Hassidim Movement.

So today, tens of thousands of Jewish Breslovers travel to the country of Ukraine in Eastern Europe to worship, sing, and dance (Video) nearby to the tomb of this great Hasidic rabbi; Rebbe’s Nachmans’ ohel (tent or dwelling place) in Uman (Video). And so today, they also sleep in tents in the parking lot, and many of them in distress for their lives as they come in hopes that they will receive a spiritual interventions and get “pulled out of hell by their sidelocks” while they are uplifted in the spirit.  Here is where they share in the Breslover’s great musical traditions.

All through the day and night, they sing and dance to many of the exquisite nigguns (Jewish tunes or melodies) that were composed by their famous rabbi; Rebbe Nachman of Breslov as seen in the next video by Rabbi Lazer Brody.

Here, huge outdoor kitchens are set up on the Breslov parking lot, cooking kosher meals for over 20,000 disciples or devotees of Rebbe Nachman. The worse problem they have to contend with is that some of them do get “food poisoning”. Yet, when they leave they bring the vibrant joy of Judaism back to Israel and around the world, attesting to their dynamic relationship with the G-d of Israel.

NASA confirms the Astronomical Wisdom of Torah on Lunar Cycles given to Moses on Mount Sinai

The Monthly Cycle of the Moon

Rabbi Lazer Brody – “So many people are worried that their sons prefer Torah study in Yeshiva to university. Be proud and happy, and please don't worry anymore.

Hashem taught Moshe Rabbenu (The Prophet Moses) on Mount Sinai things that NASA is only discovering today, thanks to their advanced technological equipment. And, Moshe Rabbenu didn't have satellites or atomic clocks - he didn't need them.

My wonderful friends and colleagues at Israel National News have made a beautiful sanctification of Hashem's name by comparing NASA's latest research on the lunar cycle to what our sages in Talmud have known for the past thousands of years:

The Talmud states that the lunar cycle spans ‘29.5 days and 793 fractions of an hour’. In Talmudic terms, the hour is divided into 1080 parts. 

793/1080 = 0.734259 hours.

0.734259/24 = 0.03059 days.

29.5 days + 0.03059 days = 29.53059 days for the moon to travel around Earth.

NASA Research concluded that the lunar cycle is 29.530588 days, two 1/1000ths of a second short of the Talmudic figure. More advanced research in Berlin came to a figure of 29.530589 days, only one thousandth of a second short of the Talmudic figure.

The Sinai tradition of the span of the lunar cycle is thus corroborated by figures reached via advanced satellites and atomic clocks.

Put down the astronomy book and start learning Tractate Rosh Hashana, the Rambam's laws of the new moon, and the Tiferet Yisroel's commentary on Mishnayot. If you're looking for a degree, go to university; if you're looking for wisdom, go to the Torah.

Sukkot: The Festival of Joy when the G-d of Israel comes to Dwell with His People!

Zechariah 14:10-19 – ““Then everyone who remains of all the nations which came up against Jerusalem will go up each year to worship the King, the L-rd of Hosts, and to keep the Festival of Sukkot. But if any of the nations of the earth does not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the L-rd of Hosts, there will be no rain upon it.

If the family of Egypt does not go up and enter, there will be no rain on them; there will be the plague with which G-d will smite the nations that do not come up to keep the Festival of Sukkot. This will be Egypt’s punishment, and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Festival of Sukkot.”

Lest we forget our past, let us use this New Year's to remember the past. If the Jews of the House of Israel and the Lost Ten Tribes of the House of Israel forget how Hashem opened the gates of heaven and allowed the creation of the State of Israel, the next door of redemption may not open except witn the harsh hand of G-d, for at His appointed time, all things must come into being.

The Shofar has always been the warning of the judgments of G-d, let us not close our eyes nor refuse to hear the Shofar call that is occuring today as we head into the eight days of the Festival of Succot, when the G-d of Israel comes to "tabernacle" with His people.

Kol Nidrei as Traditionally sung in Morocco in Northern Africa

My own family, 15 generations ago, came from Spain and was expelled during the Spanish Inquisition of 1492. Back in Toledo, Spain, our last name was "Barda". Our ancestors fled east to Poland and the Ukraine; our cousins fled south to Morocco. As such, the Moroccan Barda family is actually our 15th cousins. The Ten Days of Teshuvah (Standing with Awe in the Presence of Hashem)

 
Rosh Hashanah and the Great Shofar

The day will come in the near future that the enmity between the Jews of the House of Judah and the Lost Tribes of Israel represented by the Tribe of Joseph or Ephraim, Joseph’s heir to the divine blessing, will end. In that day, we will all as one family, will join together in the fall celebrations of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Succot.  Once again in almost three thousand years, the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will be united as one family in covenant under Hashem, the G-d of Israel.

One day in the near future, all Twelve Tribes of the House of Israel will come together and worship as one with Hashem, the G-d of Israel the command that He gave to them on the Mount called Sinai.

Leviticus 23:24 – “In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, there shall be a solemn rest for you, a sacred convocation, commemorated with loud blasts.” 

The 40 Days of Reflection before Rosh Hashanah

For forty days in the month (Elul) preceding the 7^th month of Tishrei, all the tribes of Israel will spend in reflection, introspection, and anticipation of a renewed and refreshed relationship with the G-d of our forefathers. This tradition preserved down over the last 3000 years by the Jewish people is called chesbon.

During the month of Elul, the shofar is blown each morning, except on the morning of the Shabbat.  Here are the days of preparation getting themselves ready for Rosh Hashanah by introspection, turning inward, looking deep into our psychic and culling out the roadblocks that are keeping us from a living and spiritually healthy relationship with our family, our friends and our associates in our social cultural world around us. Yes, even our relationship in the gentile world around us is important for we are Hashem’s representative to all of them. 

Rosh Hashanah: The Day of Remembering

 

“The Days of Awe”

Rosh Hashanah is a time to celebrate with the blasts of the shofar.  This special day is known by three different names; The Day of Remembering (Yom HaZikaron), The Day for Sounding the Shofar (Yom Herusah), and The Day of Judgment (Yom HaDin).

Actually the word, Rosh Hashanah actually means “Head of the Year”. Albeit the head, it is not the beginning of the year, because this day falls on the first and second day of the seventh month called Tishrei.

Actually there are four New Years in Jewish Hebrew culture:

1. Nisan 1, the New Year for Kings and festivals, during the 1^st month of the Hebrew calendar.
2.  Shevat 15 – Tu-B’Shevat, of the New Years of  the Trees;
3. Elul 1 – the New Year for tithes of plants and animals; and
4. Tishrei 1 – Rosh Hashanah, the anniversary of the Creation of the World.

During this day, we are to absolve all our Charatah implies remorse, or a feeling of guilt about the past and an intention to behave in a completely new way in the future. The person decides to become “a new man.” But teshuvah means “returning” to the old, to one’s original nature. Underlying the concept of teshuvah is the fact that the Jew is, in essence, good. Desires or temptations may deflect him temporarily from being himself, being true to his essence. But the bad that he does is not part of, nor does it affect, his real nature. Teshuvah is a return to the self.

During “repentance”, it is important that you dismiss the past and start anew in your life. Yes, you can do this every year – a time of renewal and starting afresh for teshuvah implies that you are going back to your roots in G‑d and exposing them as your true character. It might be claimed that a true Tzaddik, a righteous person has no need to repent. It may also be implied that the wicked may be incapable of doing repentance but both of them may do teshuvah. The righteous Tzaddik, though they have not sinned, “strayed from the mark” during this year, also have an obligation to constantly strive to return to their innermost spiritual soul.  This also includes the wicked, however distant they have gone away from G‑d.  They have the privilege of always returning, for teshuvah implies the fact that we are not involve creating anything new, but are only rediscovering the latent goodness that has always remained within us.

On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, the ritual of taschlich is performed. Crumbs of bread are tossed into water and the hems of garments are shaken. This alludes to the fact that sins are being cast away.

On the afternoon of Rosh Hashanah or on the second day of the festival, a Tashlich ceremony is performed. This one has a lot of symbolisms that are healthy for growing children to become involved.  In a pond, pool, stream or river of moving water, we take crumbs from inside our pockets, each one a memory of something we want to leave behind in the New Year and cast it away from our lives; forever.  The crumbs are thrown into the water is a ritual of casting away the sins in our lives and moving onward towards a new life.

This is a powerful ritual for families with children; time to talk about making mistakes, saying sorry to others for our behavior, changing our lives with a renewed vigor in order to walk away into a new life.  This New Year will be a different and more elevating year in our lives.  Yes, we, and even our children can learn to say; “Good Bye, mistakes. I do not need to do that again!”  In this ritual we can teach our children and renew it importance in our lives to take control of our actions, and now begin a lifelong process of self-reflection in improving our lives and our relationship with G-d or our forefathers.

As we dip apples in honey, and eat challah braided bread cooked in the round, for an all-around good year, or a symbol of G-d as the Keter or the Crown of our lives and together we say in company:

Y’hi ratson milfanecha Adonai Elohaynu vaylohay Avoteinu shetchadesh aleinu Shanah tovah u-m’tukah.

May it be Your will, Ad-nai our G-d and G-d of our ancestors, that you renew for us a new, good and sweet year. 

The Shofar Ceremony

In the days of ancient biblical times, the ram’s horn called the shofar was blown to announce the beginning of the New Year. Like a divine alarm clock, it awakens our spiritual inward self to reflect on how we can become better people.

During Rosh Hashanah in the synagogue, after the Torah and the Haftarah have been read, the service of the shofars begins. Included in the service are three shofar sounds; 

• Tekiah or the “Blast” that includes a long blast with a clean crisp sound;
• Shevarim (broken sound) that includes three short calls; the
• Teruah (Alarm): a rapid series of nine very short notes; and finally the
• Tekiah Gedolah (the Great Tekiah); a single blast that is held as long as the blower can hold the note.

During the Shofar Service, it is a notzvah (commandment of G-d) to hear the sounds of the blasts of the shofar. Every day during each day of Rosh Hashanah the Shofar is sounded 100 times. At the end of Yom Kippur, the shofar is blasted for one long blast.

During the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, are the days in which we have the opportunity to apologize and make restitution and forgiveness from anyone we may have offended or hurt during the year.

This is a time of spiritual and physical repentance and restitution by reflecting upon our past bad deeds, and looking forward into the New Year to make a start of a new life.

Awaiting for G-d’s Judgment with the Great Shofar

During the ancient days, when the Temples of the L-rd were filled with millions of worshippers, Yom Kippur was a day that was filled with elaborate rituals, special sin offerings or sacrifice in exchange for the atonement with G-d by the High Priest of Israel, and forgiveness through him to the Hebrew community by the Almighty One of Israel. 

The Torah explains the ceremonies in Leviticus 16 where it states;

Leviticus 16 - “The priest shall lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities and transgressions of the Israelites, whatever the sins putting them on the head of the goat. Then it shall be sent off into the wilderness… the goat shall carry away all their sins.”

During this august service, called the Day of Atonement, the High Priest with only linen white garments enters behind the Immense Veil separating the Holy Place from the Holy of Holiest. There before the Ark of the Covenant, the High Priest confesses the sins of the people and there before the Shekinah Glory of G-d he utters the Holy Name of G-d, something that is never done any other time of the year.

Today in the Orthodox synagogues during this Holiest Day in the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur begins with a serious prayer called the Kol Nidrei (meaning all vows), a legal formula written in Aramaic that impeaches the G-d of Israel to absolve us from all vows and promises we have made during the past year. Also on this day, all Jewish adults fast. Just before the setting of the sun on the eve of Yom Kippur, a festival meal is eaten. Then for the next twenty five hours, an hour after sundown, they do not eat nor drink. Fasting is a way of clearing the brain, and removing all distractions and therefore better able to focus on prayer. Fasting has a way of showing our dependency upon G-d for without His bountiful blessing even with bread and water, our lives would be quickly vanquished. It also reminds us in our hunger of the millions, maybe billions of people around the world who are starving and never get a decent meal.

According to the Talmud, after a person eats or drinks; he has but one heart, a heart only for himself.  At the same time, before a person eats or drinks, that is while he is fasting, he has two hearts; one for himself and one for all the hungry people around the world.

Yet, the main essence of Yom Kippur is resetting our spiritual time clock, returning to the “Spiritual Me”; returning to a focus on Hashem, the G-d of our covenantal relationship, and sensitizing the awareness of our blessings from “On High” and our responsibility to the people living in the greater world around us.

As Yom Kippur closes and between the days of G-d’s Day of Judgment and Succot, the G-d of Israel will also judge the rest of the gentile nations of the world, and then He will come to dwell with His people for eight days at Succot. As Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin wrote from the Orthodox Jewish Chabad organization:

Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin – “Everything about Yom Kippur, points to you: In times of old, one High Priest serving our one G-d in His one Temple on His one holiest day on behalf of His one people elicited G-d's atonement for the entire world. Today, one person, with one turn of his or her personal page, doing one good deed, or making one good resolution – can also change the course of the entire world for the good.

So this Yom Kippur, you hold the keys to the world's future. You have the power to tip the scales for all of humankind. Your good deed, your repentance, your primal cry – from the depths of your soul, will penetrate the Gates of Heaven and will elicit a reciprocal response from our One G-d.

May you merit the privilege to experience Yom Kippur in the deepest, holiest way. May you and each of your loved ones – and the entire world – be sealed in the Book of Life for a good and sweet year.  And may we all merit to see the ultimate perfection of G-d's world with the coming of our righteous Moshiach.”

After Rosh Hashana, you may greet your friends and family with the following  phrases:

L’Shanah Tovah Tikatayvu v’Tichataymu! - "May you be Written and Sealed for a Good Year in the Book of Life!"

New Moons, Rabbinic Divine Order and Messianic Consternation

 
The Shofar of the L-rd

Question sent to OvadYah Avrahami, Director of Kol Ha Tor: The New Moon and the beginning of the months sometimes never coincide. So how can it be decided to gather on that day? 

Shalom Brother.

I am not sure what you mean with “New Moon” and who’s calculation of “beginning of months” you refer to. I will thus respond by answering the common problem and accusation against the Rabbis, i.e. that they determine the date of the new moon without ref. to the actual sighting of the new moon crescent.

This is true, today.  In Biblical times they actually waited on reports of sighting of the new moon crescent before declaring the next day “New Moon”. Technically, visible new moon crescents occur after some 20 hours after conjunction – conjunction being when the moon, earth and sun are in a straight line-up after a 28 point odd days period of the moon encircling the earth.  This visible opportunity can NOT be calculated.  The earliest it has been seen after conjunction, was some 16 hours. Normally it happens after 20 hours and more.

All this, makes it IMPOSSIBLE to calculate the sighting of the New Crescent in advance.  So, if the New month is determined by SIGHTING, then it can ONLY be declared at sighting, that is, AFTER sunset on the New Moon day calculated in this way.  Several problems in the weather, air pollution, etc. add to this difficulty.

In a modern society, this is not a suitable method.  The problem comes with the Biblical Feast of Rosh HaShanah (Yom Teruah / Feast of Trumpets) which occurs ON the FIRST Day of the 7^th month – now not far off.  It is a Festive Sabbath – most probably the Day on which Messiah will Appear to save Israel from total destruction – a great current possibility!  

If determined by Sighting (as seems to be the Biblical system), then the date will be unsure until AFTER sunset on the actual Feast Day.  In a modern society we have air line schedules, and other great procedures to contend with, like closing down large factories.  It just could NOT work with advising air lines at 8 pm at night, that they may not fly the next day.  Imagine!  People book months ahead, incl. hotels, transport to airport, etc.  And what about planes in the sky at that time?  And there are many such practical implications.

So, the Rabbis who have a Divine Mandate to MANAGE G-d’s System and affairs for the people (Gen. 49:10), take it upon themselves to provide pre-calculated dates, even years ahead,  as near as possible.  But mostly, it does NOT co-incide with the actual sighting.

It is sanctimonious, in this instance, to declare that “G-d’s System must be adhered to, no matter man’s requirements.’  Rabbis have to contend with an entire nation who is some 60 – 70% secular.  They would have a rebellion on their hands by using the “after-the-time” notifications.  G-d is NOT a G-d of disorder. Businesses in Israel and Judaism plan their programs months and even years ahead in an orderly fashion, to comply with the “Rabbinic” Calendar. Conversely, great bewilderment rages in Messianic groups because of their rejection of Rabbinic leadership, especially at Pesach time, when the nation is supposed to sit down in Peace and brotherly agreement on the SAME night.  The Land of Israel runs an entire national Calendar based on Rabbinic appointment.  Perhaps this was meant as His Test Case, to see if mankind would follow His mandated ‘managers’.

So, my dear brother, you have the choice: 

• To join the Messianic “know-betters” and share in the raging consternation;
• Or, to follow the Rabbinic Calendar and have Peace of mind, knowing that you are celebrating with an entire Nation, the Chosen of the G-d of Israel.  After all, IF the Rabbis are mandated by G-d, THEY carry the responsibility and your alibi will be that “you have followed their guidance”. After all, it is the Divine Intent to make ONE Nation, following ONE System – and He has NOT left us leaderless.

Rosh Hashana 2011; A Time for Lost Israelites to Begin Preparing for their Return Home to their Hebrew-Judaic Roots

Rosh Hashanah begins on the eve of Thursday, September 29, 2011 and extends for the
World Jewish Community until sunset on Friday, September 30, 2011

The current Sabbatical Week of Years began on Rosh Hashana 2008. On that fateful day, the United States Congress voted against the TARP Act to bail out the nation’s financial banks and institutions, and the New York Wall Street collapsed 777 points. As the Jewish Congressmen were heading home for Rosh Hashanah, the world was preparing for their Great Day of Judgment as all the great banking bourses and stock exchanges went into a freefall over the next 10 days.  The “Last Days” came into their fullest expression, for those who had “eyes that can see” and “ears that can hear”.  

On Passover, Nissan 10, 2012, the demarcation time of 3½ years between the 1^st and the end of the 7^th years of the Sabbatical Week of Years between Rosh Hashanah 2008 and Rosh Hashanah 2015 will occur.  According to students of Hebrew prophecies, we understand that 7 years and 3 ½ years (1260 days) are significant prophetic times.   

According to Hebrew traditions, if “war” begins on the 7^th year or the Shemittah) year of the Sabbatical Week of Years, the Messiah will come or be revealed at the end of the 8^th year. Will we know the “date” or the “hour” of that coming?  Of course not, for this is forbidden in Jewish halakhah. Also, we will not know the date of the revelation of the New Moon on the 1^st day of Rosh Hashanah 2016 for it will only be known by the Holy One of Israel. So our expectations will extend to the final hour.

If the Messiah does not come, a new Sabbatical Week of Years will begin starting after the end of the Shemittah year of the 7^th year on the prior seven-year cycle; the eve of Rosh Hashanah 2015. The expectations with disappointment, we may have to look forward to another Sabbatical Week of Years.

The Celebration of Rosh Hashana (Rosh Hashanah) is called the Jewish New Year.  This day begins to first day of the Jewish month of Tishrei (Tishri) celebrating the day of the creation of human man, Adam.  It is also recognized as the seventh month of the Jewish festival calendar that begins in the Passover month of Abib (Nissan) when with the first maturing sprouts of barley heralded the beginning of the Spring harvest festival and the entire festival season. Officially it lasts for two days so that all the Jews living in the diaspora within the nations of the world can celebrate as one national people.

At the setting of the sun on the western horizon, Rosh Hashanah begins. During this festival day of celebration, the Jewish and Israelite culture remembers it as the “Day of the Blowing of the Shofar” or the “Day of Remembrance”.  It is celebrated at family and synagogue gatherings that include special holiday meals and sweet foods such as eating challah bread, with apples dipped in honey.

Rosh Hashanah is recognized in Jewish apocalypse as the Day of the Complete Revealing of the Messiah. On this day, the Maschiach ben Dovid (Messiah son of David) will inaugurate the beginning of the Messianic Era when David son of David will rule under the Messiah’s sovereign rule over all Planet Earth.  At this festival season that goes from the Blowing of the Shofar (7^th Trumpet of the 7^th Seal of the Orthodox Nazarene apocalypse in Revelation) through the 10 days in expectation for Yom Kippur (Great Day of Judgment), it is expected that the Messiah will fight the Seventy Nations of the World and the Evil Dark Forces of HaSatan for sovereign control over Planet Earth and establish his reign forever in Jerusalem. 

At this time also, the Lost Ten Tribes of the House of Israel will have been restored to the Land of Israel and “All Israel” (Yam Yisra’el) the rule of the Messiah will officially begin emanating out from Jerusalem and the Land of Greater Israel.

In contrast to the secular New Years celebrated by the 70 Gentile Nations of the World, Rosh Hashanah begins the time of judgment and remembrance, where Hashem, the G-d of Israel reviews each person’s deeds over the prior year. It is a time of prayer and repentance (teshuva).  All the promises not kept, debts in relationships not fulfilled to one’s friends, business associates and family will have been settled and resolved by Rosh Hashanah as the Jewish people and the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel seek forgiveness with friends and family.

Traditions and customs that have been preserved in the Jewish culture include: 

• The Challah Bread, eaten at Rosh Hashanah, is a symbol of the continuous continuity of life.
• The Apples eaten that are dipped in honey gives us the visual picture of the sweetness of life and a good health throughout the coming New Year.
• Pomegranates give us a symbol of the abundance, goodness and happiness of life.
• The blowing of the shofar reminds us that Hashem, the G-d of Abraham directed him away from his imminent Sumerian sacrificial cultural sacrifice of his only and “promised son”, Isaac, and towards the bushes when a “ram” caught in a nearby bush was sacrificed Isaac’s place as the sacrificial ram, hence ram’s horn shofar. 
• Tashlikh, a custom of reciting prayers near to naturally flowing water, like a stream, take small pieces of bread or flood, symbolically throwing them, like sin, into water, as freedom from their sins. In regions where there are no streams or rivers, a fish pond or a mikveh (ritual bath) is used.
• The Jewish people and many of the Lost Israelites assimilating through “Jewish Roots” into a Jewish lifestyle and culture do not work on Rosh Hashanah. During this day, the Jewish synagogues in many places host regular an expanded daily liturgy. This may include the reading on the story of Abraham and Isaac.

Though the Festival of Trumpets, marking the beginning of a new year in the fall was celebrating since the days of Sinai, the prayers of thanksgiving for the fall grain harvest go back to the beginning of Israelite culture.  It was in the Sefer, the Book of Ezekiel, in the 7^th to the 6^th century BCE that the Blowing of the Shofar at Rosh Hashanah was first written about in the Jewish culture and its use has continued to this present era through the Jewish Oral Torah.

 Isaiah 51:4-6 – “Pay attention to Me, My people (Lost Ten Tribes of the House of Israel); give ear to Me, My nation (Nation of Israel by the House of Judah); for instruction will come forth from Me and my judgment will be a light for peoples, to whom I will give rest.

Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth below – for the heavens will dissipate like smoke, and the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants will die, as well but my salvation will be forever and My righteousness will not be broken.

Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, the nations with My Torah (the merging of the House of Israel with the House of Judah in Ezekiel 37) in its heart: Do not fear from the disparagement of men, and do not be broken by their insults, for like a garment, a moth will eat them, and like wool, a worm will eat them; but My righteousness will be forever, and My salvation for all generations.”

When we look back upon this Fall Festival Season 2011, we may realize that we have entered a new era of human and divine interaction. What all these events may mean, we do not know at this time, but we know inside, our lives will be changed, for the G-d of Israel has promised it to be.

Ezekiel 36:22-28 (parts) - “Therefore say to the House of (the Lost Tribes of) Israel, “Thus says the Lord G-d…I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean…I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you…and cause you to walk in My statues, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.”

For months the astronomers and now a large following in the world have been watching with interest and some with terror of the Comet Elenin that will be making a close flyby with Planet Earth. Some have speculated that this is Planet X or Nibiru, but it is not. What most have failed to identity is that Comet Elenin may also be an emissary of Hashem, the G-d of Israel; a forerunner to the catastrophic judgment to fall upon Planet Earth by G-d’s emissary of judgment, Nibiru, or Planet X.

Your didactic mind may disagree with minor details. That is ok!  This is not a time to create differences between “resurrection” and “rapture” or “lunar aligned Torah feasts” versus “Rabbinic Calendar of Feasts”. Hashem has His purposes for whom He is speaking.  Yet, we pray that you spiritual soul will be awakened that something is happening – Soon!; the world will forever be changed. Great things are about to happen!

Ezekiel 36:33-36 – “Thus says the L-rd G-d: ‘On that day that I cleanse you (Lost Tribes of the House of Israel) from all your iniquities, I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, and the ruins shall be rebuilt. The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass by.

So they will say, ‘This land what was desolate has become like the garden of Eden; and the wasted, desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, the L-rd, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. I, the L-rd, have spoken it, and I will do it!”

How the G-d of Israel will write His Torah upon the hearts of the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel, we do not know! Yet, are we willing to let G-d do His divine thing?  Are we willing to consider that the failed Palestinian State will not occur, for the nations of the earth are trying to put adversaries to the Torah in land that has already been promised to the Redemption of the Lost Ten Tribes of the House of Israel and the enlargment of the Tribe of Judah? Do we have faith (emuna) in the Sovereignty of the G-d of Creation that whatever He chooses He can do, in His own way, and in His own “appointed time”? 

The state of existence we are in is now in a wake up period of time.  It is time to protect the spiritual neshama (soul) of your body and that of your loved ones and children. If Hashem (G-d of Israel) protects your neshama your body will be saved. The prophecies are clear that the G-d of Israel will redeem the “Mountains of Israel” where Shomron and Judea presently are located.
