Telegraph UK - On February 5, 2010, the Gemstone producer, Gemfield’s announced that a rare 6,225 carat rough emerald was discovered in its Zambia Kagen Mine. It was immediately called “Insofu” in the Bemba language, meaning “elephant”, due to its immense size and color and to honor the Bemba indigenous tribes in the region. Gemstones is an international participant of the World Land Trust that funds the “Wild Lands Elephant Corridor Project”.
According to the gemologist experts at the mine, they “will continue to evaluate the gem before any final decision is taken in terms of its future". According to Ian Harebottle, chief executive of Gemfields;
Ian Harebottle - "This is a unique find. The Insofu displays wonderful color and good translucency. Its sheer size, rich color and fine protective biotite shell makes it difficult to see deep into the gem. However, all indications suggest that the core of the emerald is competent and that it should yield a number of cut gems of significant size."
According to record, the largest uncut emerald was an amazingly large 86,136-carat natural beryl crystal that was reputedly to have been discovered in Carnaiba, Brazil in the year of 1974 and later valued at $1,120,080. The largest emerald crystal on record of 7,025 carats was discovered within a mine in Columbia.
